Dear Sons and Daughters,
Some of you have just embarked on the beginning of your university life, others have re-started their university studies after a long summer break, whilst some have resumed their A-level studies with the hope of entering a good university.
Meritorious children, make a firm determination in your mind, during this term time, to proceed with your studies whilst also giving special attention to your spiritual life. Do not postpone attending to your spiritual well being until after your education is over-for such a time will never come. There will always be some obstacle or reason as to why you cannot fully attend to you spiritual wellbeing. For example, once you complete your education, you will need to find a job; and you will be confined in it.
Life does not set aside a special period of time for anyone to practice Dhamma and develop spiritual practices. For this reason, try your best, when you have some free time to reflect on the Buddha’s teachings, practice Dhamma and practice loving kindness mediation.
Education helps one to gain a decent job and some happiness in this life, but the Dhamma helps you to gain happiness both in this life as well as the next. You already know that it is extremely rare that one gets the opportunity to listen to the Buddha’s teachings. We have been blessed with such an opportunity. However, moment by moment, this opportunity that we have worked hard to gain over a number of eons is slipping away if we do not make full use of it.
The Arahant Venerable Sariputta always advised his fellow monks and lay disciples that “As a city is well guarded inside and out, so you should guard your life through the Dhamma. May this rare opportunity not pass you by. Many who missed this rare opportunity suffer falling into hell”.
Dear children, from this month onwards, we will keep reminding you of what you should do as a disciple of the Buddha. For the time being, do your best to keep the 5 precepts well and practice loving kindness mediation whenever you get some free time. At the end of this term, you will be delighted at the thought of the merits you have gained by practicing this path whilst continuing your education.
May you be well and happy with metta.
